We are delighted to announce the appointment of Sazana Jayadeva as a new editor of Sociology and warmly welcome her into the role.
Sazana is an early career researcher who joined the University of Surrey in October 2023 as a ‘Surrey Future Fellow’. In her career to date, Sazana has guest-edited two journal special issues (Sociological Research Online and International Studies in the Sociology of Education) and is currently guest-editing a third (Higher Education). Sazana is also a member of the Sociological Research Online Editorial Board and is coordinating a joint project with Sociology, looking at the video and podcast strategies of the journals.
On her experiences so far, Sazana said: ‘It has been a real privilege to join Sociology as an Associate Editor. The editorial team at Surrey has been so welcoming and supportive, as have colleagues at BSA. It really feels as if I’ve gained a new community. I’ve been enjoying following and supporting the journeys of so many excellent manuscripts and, in the process, have learnt a lot about academic writing and what collegiate and constructive peer reviewing can contribute to scholarship. I’ve also been working on a plan to introduce the possibility for authors to submit video abstracts. So far, it’s been a busy and extremely enriching first half a year in this role!
My own research revolves around the broad themes of education, migration, and digital and social media. I am currently involved in two projects. The first explores the role of education influencers on social media in mediating student migration from India. The second (which I’m carrying out in collaboration with Prof. Deborah Lupton) examines how people living with Long Covid engage with self-tracking technologies and online patient communities to gain insight into their illness. I am an editorial board member of the journals Sociological Research Online and Global Networks, and I co-convene the International Research and Researchers’ Network of the Society for Research into Higher Education.’
As part of Sociology’s commitment to supporting early career researchers and those new to editing, Sazana is currently being mentored by Professor Rachel Brooks. On mentoring, Professor Brooks said: ‘Sazana is a very talented early career scholar with expertise in the sociology of media, migration and education. It’s been a pleasure to mentor her as she has taken on her role as an associate editor of Sociology. She’s already made excellent contributions to the wider editorial team based at the University of Surrey.’
